Sun Damage: What You Need to Know About Sunspots

Reversing the Signs of Sun Damaged Skin

Spending all of those lazy hours in the sun with unprotected skin can lead to patchy brown spots – usually on the face. And while these spots can be covered with makeup, this is just masking the real problem at hand – sun damage.

What Are Sunspots and Why Do We Get Them?

Sunspots are a common skin condition, particularly for people over the age of 40, those with fair skin, and those who are genetically prone to sun damage.

They appear as flat brown spots on the skin following a period of excess sun exposure and can look similar to large freckles.

Sunspots can vary in shape and size and will typically appear on areas of the body that receives the most exposure to the sun, such as your face, shoulders, forearms, and backs of your hands.

What Causes Sunspots to Develop?

As we know, UV radiation damages our skin, and after being exposed to too much sun, your skin’s melanin production increases in order to combat UVA/UVB damage, resulting in dark patches on the skin, known as sunspots.

What Can Be Done to Prevent Sun Damage?

Even if you don’t tend to burn easily, protecting your skin from damaging UV rays is also incredibly important to help fight the signs of premature aging, as well as potential skin cancers.

Sunscreen is the best way to combat the damaging effects of the sun, so be sure to choose a sunscreen that has:

  • No nano particles
  • Ease of application
  • Minimal systemic absorption
  • Little to no allergenic potential
  • Mineral ingredients such as zinc and titanium dioxide
  • Full spectrum coverage from UVA and UVB damaging rays

To further prevent sunspots and other effects of sun damage, also make sure to:

  • Always wear an SPF on exposed areas while enjoying the sun.
  • Wear protective clothing (long sleeves, long pants) and a wide brim hat when outdoors for long periods of time, especially in the middle of the day when rays are at their strongest.
  • Wear sunglasses that filter UV light.
  •  Apply a serum or topical product containing Vitamin C under your sunscreen. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor, which slows down the production of melanin and prevents sun damage.

How to Treat Sunspots

While sunspots are harmless and noncancerous, they can be bothersome and therefore treated for cosmetic purposes.

Limelight/IPL Treatments

This non-invasive photofacial treatment works by delivering intense pulsed light (IPL) to the target area, causing unwanted veins to coagulate and collapse. This also causes the brown pigments from sunspots and other red pigments in your skin to slough off or break down for reabsorption into the body.
