Part Ways With Unwanted Skin Tags

Skin Tags, Explained

If you’ve ever discovered a small growth of skin protruding from your body and immediately wanted it gone, you’re not alone.

While completely harmless, these growths, most commonly known as skin tags, can be a nuisance, getting caught in clothing and causing discomfort.

Skin tags are small, painless growths on the skin made up of blood vessels and collagen surrounded by an outer layer of skin.

Skin tags are common in both men and women, especially after age 50, and typically appear on the:

  • Eyelids
  • Thighs
  • Armpits
  • Groin
  • Neck
  • Under your breasts

The good news is that skin tags are not cancerous, nor are they contagious. They are also not associated with any other skin condition.

In fact, skin tags pose absolutely no risk to your health and are mainly considered an aesthetic condition.

What Do They Look Like and Why Do They Occur?

Skin tags look like small bits of hanging skin that are typically smaller than 2 millimeters in size and are soft to the touch. However, some can grow as large as several centimeters.

Skin tags can either be smooth and round or wrinkly and asymmetrical. They can also be either flesh coloured or darker than the surrounding skin due to hyperpigmentation.

There is no known cause of skin tags, however, because they often appear in the folds of the skin, it’s believed that friction may play a role.

Skin tags can also be a side effect of pregnancy, due to both pregnancy hormones and weight gain.

The following factors may also place you at greater risk for developing skin tags:

  • Weight gain
  • Pregnancy
  • Family history
  • Insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
